I'm a terrible Duellist

Unsurprisingly I'm not doing so well at Duelling Paintrbushes. Again. Much like Greg (over at the Hoodlings Hole) I never really got going, which means I basically haven't done anything, although the reasoning is a bit different.

Originally I was planning to play in an Age of Sigmar event over the weekend, so spent the first week of Octorber painting stuff for that. The stuff I was painting for that wasn't the same stuff I was going to paint for DP, so I was basically trying to cram extra stuff into an already busy month. Not to says I actually did a great deal, I failed so miserably at painting stuff for the tournament that I ended up dropping out.

So while I haven't done entirely nothing, DP progress at this point is basically nil.

What I have done in the past few weeks is:

Finish my Oldblood on Carnosaur:
RAWR!!!

Sooo many scales

Possibly if there were less scales I would get more done...

Start some Terradons (these count for DP!!!! yay progress omg)

And start the cleaning/scraping/prep work on my Heresy Dragon:
Missing: Rubber Duck, presume eaten by Dragon.
The Dragon kit was surprisingly easy to clean up given how monstrously large it is, and only one small bit needs to be bent back into place. Obviously there will be some gaps to fill but from the test fitting I've done so far this will be minimal.

In the past I had the misfortune of putting together a unit of Avatars of War Vestals of Nemesis (Witch Elves), I easily spent more time scraping and de mould lining those than I did the dragon, which is a credit to Andy over at Heresy (and also a damning indictment of the AoW models).

Hopefully I'll have some more Dragon pics in the coming days as this is what I'm planning on working on next. As for Duelling Paintbrushes, I feel it is too late to make a comeback, and at least I look better than Greg as I have basecoated some Terradons.

Duelling Paintbrushes 2015

I'm Back Baby!

I'd been meaning to get back to blogging, and have been pushed towards it a bit by the advent of Duelling Paintbrushes; the annual painting challenge run by Owen over at Terrain for Hippos.

I've tried it before and failed miserably, but I'm pretty keen to get lots done this month as I try and finish the majority of my Lizardmen army that I've been painting on and off (mostly off) for a couple of years now.

A lot has happened since my last post, I've spent a year in Germany, played at another ETC and gone through the big game change up that happened when AoS came out in June. At the moment I'm not really committed to any particular game, but I am enjoying getting into Kings of War, which is part of why I'm taking part in this years Duelling Paintbrushes which is KoW focused. I'll likely write up my thoughts on KoW in another post, as that is a pretty big discussion that I don't have time to write out right now.

The rules for Duelling Paintbrushes: Duel of Kings are as follows:

Start painting October 1st 2015.
Finish painting October 31st 2015.
You must paint a horde and its attached units for Kings of War.
A Horde entitles one to:
A single character
A single warmachine
A single monster (if available to your faction)
And 4 Troops
Your horde and troops may be Infantry, Cavalry, Large Infantry or Large Cavalry.
You do not need to use official models, but your choice of models MUST make sense (no painting Chaos Warriors and claiming they are Goblins for instance)

You can assemble and undercoat before hand. Or you can be arrogant and do it all during DP 5 and make everyone else feel slow.
I'm doing things a little bit differently however as I have very limited access to any "troop" type Salamander models. Its not that I don't have any skinks or saurus style infantry, its that I've painted (or part painted) them already! This makes them ineligible for use in DP: DoK, so i have to change it up a bit. I'll be going on the theory that a regiment is equal to a pair of troops, I'll also paint an extra monster as the Salamander army doesn't have any warmachines.

Over the next month I intend to paint:

Kroxigor/Tyrants
Horde of 6
I'll be using either current or 5th edition GW Kroxigor for these, I have 4 lying around here so will have to source some more before the end of the month!

Ancients on Rhinosaurs
Regiment of 3
These will be a trio of 6th edition Lizardmen Carnosaurs. I've got 4 already, so not quite enough to do a horde. These will be a big challenge to get done. They're big, detailed models and I suspect will take longer than 20 skinks (two troops worth). I've built two of them already, they look like this:

Terradons/Ripperdactyls/Ghekkotah Sky Raiders
Regiment of 3
These will be a unit of 3 of the current Terradons/Ripperdactyls from GW. I also have two further units of the old Terradons to paint up at some point, but they won't feature in this DP.

Skink Priest/Mage Priest on foot.
Character
I'll be using a 6th ed skink priest for this. I'm not really sure its the most appropriate for a mage priest (which I think is meant to be Saurus sized) but I've already painted my Slann, and don't have a Saurus mage model lying around (might convert one at some point, although the concept of a Saurus mage seems pretty alien to me).

Salamander/Lekelidon
Monster/Warmachine
Lekelidons are fairly smallish monsters (only height two and not great in combat) that do a bit of a shooting attack. I'll use a current GW Salamander model for this on a 50mm base.

Unknown
Monster
Not sure what my last monster will be, I think it will depend on time. If I'm low on time I might paint up another Lekelidon (I'm using two in some of my games anyway) but what I would like to paint is a "Fire Drake" for which I'd like to use this model from the Hobbit:

I've yet to buy the figure however, so not entirely sure if I'll go through with it or not.

That's all for now folks! On to the painting!
